I've been reading a lot of books lately, where the boy falls in love with the girl suddenly, and is all romantic, and super caring, etc. etc.
It just occurred to me that it seems like boys are romanticized in books.
This is a random thought, and i'm typing this on my phone so I can't make it long, but what is your guys's take?
Do books romanticize boys? Make them seem better than they are?
UPDATE:
And, this just occurred to me:in books, when someone likes someone, that person always loves them back.

I have to agree with you on this one, Emily. Boys are over-romanticized in most current YA books. But maybe that's because in real life, young adult guys can be a bit, ah, how shall I put this - emotionally remedial. Especially when compared to young adult women. So, we fix them up in fiction. Make them more to our liking.
ReplyDeletePersonally, as a reader and author, I think relationships that start out with a little conflict (covering what is probably unrecognized or denied sexual tension) are far more interesting and believable. As in the animal kingdom, the mating dance is usually way more exciting than the actual mating. Give me some tension and conflict and make me wonder if the two will ever actually hook up!
Hi Kelan, thanks for commenting! By the way, I love your name. :)
DeleteI agree! I think it's a lot better when the characters start off a bit standoffish towards each other, and then they slowly warm towards each other, instead of sudden hopeless romantic love, because it leaves you wondering AND it's more like real life! It's a win-win!
Thanks. Though it's interesting what Google/Blogger does with the apostrophe in my last name. Why settle for one tiny character when you can have 4 completely strange ones! Gotta figure out where and how to correct that. I've tried, but alas...
ReplyDeleteBut back to the matter at hand, have you tweeted this great question? I'd love to hear what others have to say on the subject.

Haha! Blogger is always doing that with apostrophes, especially when I leave links, it's so annoying!
DeleteNo, I haven't tweeted it yet- it was just a random spur of the moment pondering, but I can tweet it!

Would also make a great group discussion on Goodreads!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to put up a group discussion in a bit. :)
