Author Interivew : Kelsey Sutton(Some Quiet Place)

A while ago I had the awesome opportunity to interview Kelsey Sutton, author of Some Quiet Place, out July 8th 2013 from Flux(you can check out the amazing cover over on the side.)

1. What inspired you to write your first book?
With SOME QUIET PLACE, it was a single sentence. I was staring at a blank Word document, and I just needed to start.  So I wrote, "Fear rooted me in place" or something like that. I can't remember the exact words. They were utterly cliche, and I leaned back in my chair, frowning. How could I make this unique? I kept going back to the fear. Somehow, eventually, it became an actual being. The other Emotions followed, and once I had the concept in my mind, it went from there.

2. What was the hardest part of writing your book?
The hardest part was probably the revisions. I write first drafts pretty quickly, but they're always rough. After signing with my agent, I probably rewrote half of it. But it's only gotten better, so all the hard work was absolutely worth it.

3. Do you have any advice for other writers?
All the worn out, typical things. They're worn out because they're true. Never give up and follow your heart. I wrote the story that was in my head, and even when I kept getting rejections, I kept going after my dream. It's something every writer has in common, I think: perseverance.

4. What is your favorite quote, and why is it your favorite?
Probably one Winston Churchill said: "If you're going through hell... keep going." I had it rough for a few years, and it would have been so easy to give up or go down a bad path. I think, in many ways, writing saved me. Eventually life and circumstances got better, and now I have a book coming out in a few months. It's just amazing.

5. What's your favorite snackfood?
Cheese. Enough Said.

Thanks for stopping by the blog, Kelsey!

  2. I want to read this book so bad - there is somethin g so beautiful about the cover and the premise of it intrigues me. That's interesting that the revisions are the hard part for her, I would consider the first draft the nearly impossible part, but then again, I'm not a writer! :)

I love all your comments, and it makes me so freakishly happy to get the alert that I have a new one, so thank you!
