My Review :As you’ve all probably noticed I’ve been reading a lot of sci-fi /dystopian books. Some disappoint, some are the epitome of awesome and some are okay. This one was interesting to say at least. At some points I was like Whoah! and at those moments I could definitely describe it as the epitome of awesome, but at other times I found myself thinking this was an okay read. So it’s a little bit of both I guess! (Which is not bad!)
Countdown has lots of action! Seriously, plenty of action! So if that’s what you’re into you should definitely pick this up. Countdown is past-paced right of the bat. The tension and action is present throughout the whole read and doesn’t stop until the story is finished.
The characters were fun. Kira is a fighter through an through. She’s been to hell and back and as if that wasn’t enough she gets forced to fight for her life in Countdown. As you might have noticed sarcasm and dark humour are kinda my thing in books. I don’t know why but I just love it, both Kira and Rogan have that nail it at this aspect. Rogan fits the whole mysterious and sarcastic role perfectly, but he’s not all bad boy-ish like you’d normally see in a character. From the moment he’s introduced I just knew that there was more to him. Kira’s not the only one that’s been to hell and back and even though you don’t know what happened to him until later in the story, there’s just something that had me notice it straight away!
Both of them have this sassy/ sarcastic banter/ humour thing going on that had me cracking up every now and then. It brought some relief to the always existing tension that was always just right there. I love how they grew to trust each other and how they learned to know each other… yes maybe how they met was forced but it just worked. The romance blooming between there wasn’t too much, it was just the right amount for a story like this. I mean… you can’t go all lovey-dovey while being paired in extreme circumstances while fighting for your lives! Their connection slowly builds until it grows into something they can both rely on.
I loved the whole Countdown aspect, it was of course the most important thing happening in the book, but to me there were just a little bit to much things going on. What I’m talking about is, while the story was mainly about the Countdown, aside from that there had been a plague in the past, there was a Colony somewhere away where life would be so much better and then Kira also had this ability to sense other peoples emotions and read their thoughts (She was just as surprised about this as me… Even though I did like the twist her ability caused). It was just a little bit too much sometimes in my opinion.
Some twists in the plot came as a big surprise, but others I’d seen coming right away. Some things were a bit predictable where others weren’t at all.
All and all, I thing this was a very good read. Countdown wasn’t the best dystopian book I’ve read, but it most certainly wasn’t the least either! I had a whole lot of fun while reading it.
