Summary :In a world ravaged by mutation, a teenage girl must travel into the forbidden Savage Zone to recover lost artifacts or her father’s life is forfeit.

America has been ravaged by a war that has left the eastern half of the country riddled with mutation. Many of the people there exhibit varying degrees of animal traits. Even the plantlife has gone feral.

Crossing from west to east is supposed to be forbidden, but sometimes it’s necessary. Some enter the Savage Zone to provide humanitarian relief. Sixteen-year-old Lane’s father goes there to retrieve lost artifacts—he is a Fetch. It’s a dangerous life, but rewarding—until he’s caught.

Desperate to save her father, Lane agrees to complete his latest job. That means leaving behind her life of comfort and risking life and limb—and her very DNA—in the Savage Zone. But she’s not alone. In order to complete her objective, Lane strikes a deal with handsome, roguish Rafe. In exchange for his help as a guide, Lane is supposed to sneak him back west. But though Rafe doesn’t exhibit any signs of “manimal” mutation, he’s hardly civilized . . . and he may not be trustworthy.

My review :After reading Inhuman I realize that I am a bit ashamed to say that I had never read one of Kat Falls’ books before… Yes it was that good! When I started reading this I was expecting one of those books that are pretty good reads, but also one of those books that has tons of other books with a similar genre and storyline. But this book turned out to be a pleasant surprise for me! Because once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down.

Bad-ass main character? Check. I loved Lane! Lane is strong and smart and most importantly not afraid to get her hands dirty to save the one person that means the world to her: her father. She doesn’t whine and fight for what she wants. She even possibly get’s more bad ass as the book progresses, she learns fast what if means to be on the other side of The Wall, away from the sheltered life she’s always lead. Though she does get a little help…

*cue swoon* She has help from two guys. Rafe is the ‘bad boy’ you just know is hiding a tender personality behind that façade, and Everson is the ‘good guy’ with a damaged past that most of all just wants to do what’s right. Both guys are total opposites, but both are endearing in their own way! It’s not your typical love-triangle. As you might have read before I got kinda tired of all the girls pulling a Bella… Yes the guys are vying for her attention every now and then, which had me laughing quite a lot, but the story doesn’t resolve around it. There is some mutual attraction, but it works because its just not what the whole story is about, that and Lane isn’t whining about how she loves them both and about how she can’t make a choice between them. There’s just no time to think about that because the main thing on her mind is saving her fathers life.

The virus aspect is interesting, I can’t say I’ve never read a YA book that had a virus aspect in it, but the ferals, hybrids and manimals are what make the story so special. That and Kat Fall’s addictive vivid, fast-paced and empathetic way of writing. Great word building and dialogue. A fun and enjoyable read! I will definitely pick up the second instalment!
